Coaching

Everyone loves to score a goal. It makes millions of football fans roar in triumph all over the world. So why do we leave so many goals un-scored in our own lives? Why do we often find to our dismay that we are still not doing what we want to do? Why do we avoid attempting the very things that could make us happier?

'A goal is a dream with a deadline,' said Walt Disney who was pretty good at realising his dreams. Goals are short term, medium and long term and each goal nestles into other larger goals. They give us our motivational and driving force and lend us a good deal of energy to overcome obstacles. It is a good idea to distinguish two aspects of goals: wants and needs. Here's a quick reflection.

Answer the following questions:

  • What do I want to do?
  • What do I need to do?
  • Are you doing what you want?
  • Are you doing what you need?
  • If not then when are you going to start?

What is coaching?

Coaching is having a skilled guide to help people to put back the alignment between their goals and their lives. In coaching even simple questions have a very powerful effect. The coach listens to what you wish to achieve and asks quality questions.

Why do we need coaching?

Roman Emperor and philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, said, 'Do not act as if you had a thousand years to live.' But most people have a problem acting 'now'. They generally procrastinate and allow problems to build until a bad experience forces them to shift from their habitual patterns.

Dorothea Brande wrote an inspirational book called 'Wake up and Live' (1937).Long before the renaissance of personal development movement a writer named Dorothea Brande was on to something. She wrote an inspirational book called 'Wake up and Live' (1937). She indicated that the reason we don't do the things we want is that we have an unconscious will to failure. We are like the guy who is going in the wrong direction. Or we had a clear goal, but the diversion seemed just that little bit more interesting, so got lost and the original goal faded. Symptoms of this problem include:

  1. Sleeping too much, even those who nap.
  2. Heavy Drinking - a spiritual malaise as death wish
  3. Relentless Movie goers
  4. Party Animals -who 'set abnormal value on release'
  5. Embroiderers and Knitters
  6. Aimless conversationalists
  7. Overuse of verbal mannerisms
  8. Detail obsession
  9. People who take on things beyond their powers
  10. Martyrs of self sacrifice
  11. Aiders and Abettors of artists. 'The most successful failures of all'. Artists' Way author, Julia Cameron, calls these 'shadow artists'.
  12. Universal charmers
  13. Eternal children
  14. People who act in too much haste.

Maybe she was harsh, but we do very often deceive the world into believing we are living up to our fullest capacity. Her answer was simple, to tell yourself once and for all, emotionally grasping the bull by the horns, to 'Act as if You Cannot Fail'.

This is not always easy to do alone, which is why most people benefit from a professional coach to steer their course. Not to do it for them, but to offer the right kind of help and assistance to keep on track. When coaching is used in combination with NLP and Hypnosis it can bring even deeper solutions.
